In a country that sees 166 million MAU and 159 million Mobile MAU, it’s safe to say Facebook is a powerful medium through which people communicate and share thoughts, ideas, and feelings.

Urban India is evolving as an increasingly digital entity in its very fiber. Naturally, when we invest so much of our lives on the Internet, we begin to live in it. We find love on the web, we shop for vanity, seek validation, engage in conversation and debates.
A record of the top 10 most talked about topics from India in 2016 on Facebook shows that Diwali was the most talked about subject this year.

People also cyber-discussed cricket, the Uri attacks and surgical strike and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (the movie). Hardwell’s India Tour, Priyanka Chopra, the Rio Olympics were also hot topics on the internet. The overnight gaming sensation, Pokemon Go, which is also on the list, owes a large part of its instant success to the massive word-of-mouth promotion it received on the internet. Pathankot and the iPhone 7 launch also made it to the list of the top 10 most talked about topics from India.

Globally, the top moments on Facebook reflected an interesting mix of politics and frivolity. The U.S Presidential Election topped the list with discussions on Brazilian politics coming second.

Coming third in the list of top moments recorded in 2016, was Pokemon Go. Niantic’s innovative gameplay coupled with the Pokemon franchise’s mass appeal skyrocketed the game to unbelievable popularity.
Black Lives Matter, a growing movement that finds its roots in America, was the fourth highest discussed topic, globally.

Rodrigo Duterte and the Philippine presidential election, Olympics, Brexit and the Super Bowl came next on the list.

The spectacular David Bowie and legendary boxer Muhammad Ali concluded the list placing ninth and tenth, respectively, on the list of top moments on Facebook.

The internet culture birthed and fuelled ‘the hashtag’ to the phenomenon it is today. Conceived on Twitter, and subsequently adopted by Facebook and Instagram, hashtags have enabled internet users all over the world to navigate to their preferred topical ecosystem with ease. The most used Instagram hashtags from India, in order of popularity, include: #love, #instagood, #fun, #india and #instagram.
Now, we know how crazy of a fad it is to upload photos of your food to Instagram. But what comes to a close second is snapping a picture of yourself in a buzzing, vibrant place. Who hasn’t had the urge to get a selfie with the Eiffel Tower? Or a mock shot supporting the leaning tower of Pisa?

Marine Drive, Mumbai tops the list of ‘most Instagrammed locations of 2016 from India’. The Taj Mahal, Hauz Khas Village, New Dehli, Juhu Beach, Mumbai, India Gate, New Dehli follow on the list.

While most of us love posting on Instagram every day, according to Facebook, there is a clear peak in posting on certain days of the year. The most Instagrammed days in India were recorded as Diwali- the festival of lights (10/30/16), children’s day (11/14/16) and Dussehra- the celebration of good over evil (10/11/16). After all, who can resist showing off a few extra photos of the new clothes, mithais, and patakas?

The top 10 moments of this year’s Year in Review were measured by how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January 1 and November 27, 2016. To put this list together, mentions were analyzed in an aggregated, anonymized way and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year on Facebook.
